  1.        LaTeX 2.09 NFSS1 style for Russian fonts in alternative encoding.

  3. The alternative encoding is de-facto standard on MS-DOS PC
  4. computers in Russia. In this encoding first half of code
  5. table (0-127) coincides with standard ASCII and cyrillic
  6. characters are located in second part of the table (128-255).
  7. Usually some simple screen and keyboard driver is used in order
  8. to type cyrillic characters.

  10. This directory includes:

  13. cmcyr.sty - main style file
  14. lhyphen.rus rhyphen.tex - support of Russian hyphenation
  15. rusfonts.tex - simple test
  16.  
  17. In order to use cmcyr style you need Russian fonts in
  18. alternative encoding. These fonts is available from CTAN in
  19. /fonts/cmcyralt
  20. Actually it is composite virtual fonts which reproduce
  21. alternative encoding by mapping first half of ASCII table to
  22. standard TeX's Computer Modern font and second part to cmcyr fonts.

  24. The cmcyr style replaces basic LaTeX fonts by these virtual fonts.
  25. Just place cmcyr.sty files into LaTeX input directory and say
  26.  
  27. \documantstyle[cmcyr,... ]{...}
  28.  
  29. in the preamble of your document. Now you can type any English
  30. and Russian text (in alternative encoding) in any order.
  31. No any special font switching commands is required.
  32.  
  33. Since alternative encoding uses codes higher than 127 for
  34. Russian characters you need TeX which understand 8-bit input,
  35. and drivers which understand virtual fonts.
  36. The best choice for MS-DOS PC is emTeX and its dvidrv drivers
  37. (/systems/msdos/emtex directory on CTAN).

  39. If you want to have correct hyphenation for Russian you
  40. need to regenerate LaTeX format file. Put lhyphen.rus
  41. and rhyphen.tex in LaTeX input directory.
  42. Copy files (it is a good idea to save old ones):
  43. lhyphen.rus  -> lhyphen.tex
  44. lfonts.new   -> lfonts.tex
  45. preload.ori  -> preload.tex
  46. basefont.tex -> xxxlfont.sty
  47. fontdef.max (or other option of fontdef.*) -> fontdef.tex
  48. Call iniTeX on lplain. In particular, for emTeX you have to say:

  50. > tex /i /o /8 /mt65500 lplain \dump
  51.  
  52. This produces format with both English and Russian hyphenation
  53. tables. Notice, that generated format must be invoked with the
  54. same /mt65500 switch
  55.
